Visibility

Anchored in the imperative to reclaim and honor authentic narratives, this area of HUṠWEJ’s work amplifies the voices of the Nisenan people by sharing untold histories, addressing erasure, and advocating for the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe’s rightful recognition and representation.

The Ancestral Homelands Reciprocity Program (AHRP) is a community-driven financial support initiative to cultivate Reciprocal Relationship between the NCR Nisenan Tribe and the broader community that contributes to the stability of HUṠWEJ, so that it may grow in its capacity to improve living standards of Tribal members, advocate for Tribal sovereignty and Land rematriation, and Cultural preservation and revitalization.

Nisenan Archive

The Nevada City Rancheria Tribal Community Archive is a living repository that preserves Nisenan history, Culture, and knowledge under Tribal stewardship. It serves as a central hub for research, education, exhibitions, and public-facing storytelling that advances truth-telling and visibility while honoring Indigenous knowledge protocols. Guided by Tribal stewardship, it informs exhibitions, educational resources, and partnerships that restore visibility to the human and ecological history of these lands.

Nisenan Heritage Day

Nisenan Heritage Day was created as a space of truth-telling, Cultural education, and community connection. It acknowledges the centuries of erasure, while centering the wisdom, stewardship, and sovereignty of the Nisenan People today. Each year’s program highlights topics of pressing relevance for the Tribe, while creating bridges of understanding with the broader Sierra Foothill community.

ORANGE SHIRT DAY

Orange Shirt Day is a day of remembrance and reflection that acknowledges the lasting impacts of the boarding school system and forced assimilation on Indigenous Peoples, including the NCR Nisenan Tribe. Observed in solidarity with Indigenous communities, it creates space for truth-telling, education, and accountability around historical and ongoing harms. The day honors survivors, uplifts Indigenous resilience, and reinforces the importance of remembrance as a foundation for healing and justice.

VISIBILITY THROUGH ART

The Visibility Through Art initiative amplifies Nisenan history and enduring presence on their Ancestral Homelands through storytelling, Cultural revitalization, and collaborative art. By partnering with local artists, the project creates meaningful exhibits and art installations that invite public engagement, foster dialogue around erased history, and celebrate Nisenan Culture and strength.
