About HUṠWEJ

Nisenan Tribally-Guided Nonprofit

HUṠWEJ is a Tribally-guided nonprofit created to carry forward the wishes, responsibilities, and long-term vision of the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe. Its mission is to preserve, protect, and perpetuate Nisenan Culture.

Nisenan Tribally-Guided Nonprofit

The name HUṠWEJ – meaning “wish” in the Nisenan language – reflects the organization’s purpose: to support what the Tribe has identified as necessary for Cultural continuity, land healing, and Tribal community wellbeing.

HUṠWEJ exists to serve the Tribe and is accountable first and foremost to the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribal community. Every program, partnership, and decision is shaped through Tribal leadership, centering Nisenan voices and upholding Tribal sovereignty.

The nonprofit organization does not exist independently of the Tribe, nor does it replace Tribal governance. Instead, it functions as a vehicle – created at the Tribe’s direction – to carry out Tribal priorities within systems that continue to deny the Tribe’s federal recognition.

Until such a time as the Tribe regains federal recognition, HUṠWEJ functions as an administrative and programmatic proxy, allowing the Tribe to steward resources, receive funding, and advance initiatives that would otherwise be inaccessible under current federal policy.

Through this role, HUṠWEJ supports Cultural revitalization, land rematriation, Tribally-guided land stewardship, youth programming, community wellness, and public education. All work is grounded in Indigenous leadership, Traditional Ecological Knowledge, and reciprocal relationship with land and community, with the long-term goal of strengthening self-determination, visibility, and Cultural continuity for future generations.
