Orange Shirt Day is observed each year to honor and commemorate the Indigenous children who were taken from their families and forced into Residential and Boarding schools in the United States and Canada. 

It is a day to remember the children who never returned home, acknowledge survivors and their families, and recognize the ongoing impacts these assimilation policies continue to have on Indigenous families and Tribal communities today. 

On Saturday, September 26 from 4pm - 6pm, the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe, HUṠWEJ, and Be The Change / Elevate Youth invite you to gather with us at Odd Fellows Hall in Nevada City for an afternoon of remembrance, education, Culture, and community connection. 

Throughout the gathering, participants will be invited to move through interactive stations incorporating Nisenan language, art, hand games, educational films, and opportunities for learning and reflection. Nisenan Tribal Elders, youth, and community members will help guide activities throughout the event. 

Together, we will remember those who were taken, recognize the generations of Indigenous families impacted by these policies, and affirm that Every Child Matters.
