WEAVING
THE FUTURE
The Ongoing Revitalization of
the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe
A window into HUSWEJ’s work, celebrating the progress and revitalization of the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe, their Culture, and Ancestral Homelands
We Are Still Here
A new mural at Southside Park brings Nisenan visibility into the public landscape through HUṠWEJ’s We Are Still Here panel, honoring Nisenan Elder Dutch Rose and the enduring presence of the Nisenan people in their Ancestral Homelands.
Created as part of a larger community mural project celebrating Indigenous and Latino histories in California, the work reflects themes of Cultural reclamation, continuity, and shared belonging.
A New Name Rooted in Hope
After years of growth and deepening Tribal leadership, we are honored to share an important evolution.
California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project – the Tribally-guided nonprofit you’ve supported as CHIRP – is now publicly known as HUṠWEJ (pronounced HOOSH-way), a Nisenan word meaning “wish.”
This moment marks more than a name change. It reflects who we are today – and the future we’re actively building together.
Honoring Ginger
We celebrate the birth of Virginia "Ginger" Covert.
Although she has passed from the earthly realm, and we cannot see her, we certainly can feel her presence all around us and in everything we do.
