A Nisenan Wish
HUSWEJ embodies the collective wishes of the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe for a thriving future rooted in Nisenan Cultural revitalization, land rematriation and Indigenous stewardship, and Tribal sovereignty.
Our Mission
HUSWEJ, the Nisenan word for “wish,” exists to uplift the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe through land rematriation, Cultural revitalization, and community education.
Guided by Nisenan leadership and informed by Ancestral Protocols, we work to preserve, protect, and perpetuate Nisenan Culture, ensuring that traditional knowledge, land relationships, Cultural revitalization, and community well-being remain at the center of everything we do.
Our work weaves together people, land, Culture, and truth — opening pathways for visibility, justice, and a future of Cultural renewal that supports a thriving Nisenan Tribe and their Ancestral Homelands now and for generations to come.
Our Vision
As a tribally-guided nonprofit, HUSWEJ envisions a future where land and Culture are reunited, where the wisdom of the ancestors guides innovative pathways forward, and where the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe thrives as sovereign stewards of their Ancestral Homelands.
Informed by Ancestral memory and animated by a sacred wish to carry ancient wisdom into a flourishing future, HUSWEJ seeks to heal the relationship between people and place – restoring Culture to landscape, and landscape to Culture.
